"Hands"
Luke 10:38-42
Mark 9:33-37
Today's message is an "object lesson," for we will be examining our hands. What mysterious and wonderful innovations they are, reflecting God's creative genius. We human beings have a special roll in God's creation, in part, due to the "make-up" of our hands. The fact that our thumbs and the top of out first fingers can touch enables us to do things that no other creature can do.
Our hands reveal many things about us. They tell others about our age and vocation. They also reveal to others the disciplines of life we hold to be important. Our hands can express our moments of devotion and piety. They can communicate a ritual of blessing. There is the beautiful line in the New Testament where the little children come to Jesus and he takes them into his arms and lays his hands upon them.
God has given us our hands to share expressions of love and concern to one another; and, to do acts of service in God's creation. It is tragic when hands are not employed in the acts of service and grace. Jesus knew of that tragedy when he saidc to Martha: "...you are worried and distracted by many things..." Maybe there are not only moments for service and employment; but also occasions to simply appreciate the moment. Our hands can reflect such moments.
May we take a moment and take a look at our hands and let us take a spiritual inventory of how we utilize them!
