Growing Spiritually in the New Year

Posted by Pastor Paula Ferris on

Just about everyone I know seems to have caught some kind of creeping crud over the holidays, including me!  I’m still coughing, but feeling great anyway!

Why does that happen?  You know—doing too much and then collapsing on December 26th, because “it’s over now!”  And traveling on planes.  And lots of hugging and kissing people who’ve been traveling on planes.

The last thing you’re thinking about is “How am I going to have a wonderful year of spiritual growth!”  (Most of us are making resolutions about “less growth”, if you know what I mean, wink, wink, nudge, nudge.)

My holiday was spent blowing my nose and coughing, but nothing could stop the joy of visiting my six-and-three-quarters-year-old nephews and my brother and sister-in-law.  What a blast!  They live high in the Rockies and we went in a hot springs and made “Christmas Tree pizza.”  I got to pray with their family and talk spiritual growth with both my brother and my sister-in-law who are wonderfully spiritual people.  What an uplift that was!

Then I took my “oops-way-too-expensive-because-Christmas-Day” rental truck (e-NOR-mous) on a fabulous day long drive north through Leadville, CO (highest city in the country they claim), Breckenridge (what a mob!) and some of the most breathtaking vistas I’ve seen.  Snow everywhere except on the road!  Wow!  I couldn’t get radio reception, so it was just God and me and stunning creation for seven hours (it’s a four hour drive, but I stopped a lot to gaze.)

Then two days with my “sister-from-another-mother” in Loveland and a long talk about the spirituality of Star Wars and her sermon that Sunday.

Spiritual growth has always felt urgent to me, since my teen-age years.  As I’ve aged, my ideas about what that is, and how to experience it, have changed and widened in ways I could never have guessed.

What about you?  Please send me an email if you have a good story about this . . .

Blessings on you this new year as you seek and enjoy spiritual life and growth!

Shalom,

Pastor Paula
